Spring officially started this week and it’s the perfect time to clean out EVERYTHING, especially your closet. At the end of the winter my closet is always a wreck, so I’ve had lots of spring cleaning experience. Here are my favorite tips for storing, organizing, and making space in my closet. Store those coats, bring out your shorts, and start spring cleaning.

Yay or Nay?

Always start the process by going through everything. Begin with 3 piles of the clothes you know you want, the clothes you know you don’t want, and the clothes you cant decide if you need to keep or not. After this point, give away everything you don’t want or need and start the organizing process.

In or Out?

The next step is to start choosing which items are in or out of season. Keep everything you will need for the next few months in your everyday closet, and move all else into another closet or folded somewhere you can store them.

Hang or Fold?

Each persons closet space will differ, but for most of us, we will need to hang some items, and fold others. I always hang my shirts and jackets because I usually base my whole outfit off of tops. I fold my jeans in categories so I can easily access which wash or style I want. Casual clothes and athletic wear are always folded in my drawers and all else in hung.

What goes where?

Categorize your closet to make things easier for you. I like to section off my dresses, skirts, casual tees, nice tops, jackets, and sweatshirts so I can find just what I need. I also like to color coordinate my everyday wear so I can find what I need quickly.

Shoes are pretty easy to organize. I pretty much just separate my heels from my sneakers from my sandals from my boots and voila, the shoes are perfectly placed.

What to do with…?

When everything is finally placed, accessories have to be dealt with. I love to get jewelry sectionals for my necklaces, rings, and bracelets and fill up a drawer with them . Scarves and hat are always easy to hang or store depending on your preference.
